Sephora Play! August 2017 — Beauty Box Review, Box #122

Hi everyone! In today’s post we are going to be reviewing the August 2017 Sephora Play! beauty box. For those who aren’t familiar, Sephora Play! is a monthly subscription beauty box that contains five deluxe makeup, skincare, or haircare samples, as well as one fragrance sample, for $10/month. The box variation that you receive is based on your Sephora profile. With that being said, let’s jump into reviewing what I received for my August 2017 Play! box.

Alterna Caviar Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist

SephoraPlayAugust2017_02Alterna Caviar Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist deluxe sample

  • Full size: 4.8 fl oz / 141  mL
    • Retail value: $30.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 1.4 fl. oz / 41 mL
    • Retail value: $8.72 USD

I’m excited to use this. Apparently it helps to provide volume instantly and over time, which is an interesting claim. I currently use the Alterna Caviar CC Cream for Hair and really enjoy that product, so I want to see what adding this into my routine will do. I have fine, color-treated hair, so I need something lightweight that will give me some hold along with the volume. All of Alterna’s products smell good to me, as well, and I think layering this with the Caviar CC Cream will help lock that scent in. I don’t have any reservations about this product, I’m totally on board with trying it.

beautyblender micro.mini

SephoraPlayAugust2017_03beautyblender micro.mini (full sized item)

SephoraPlayAugust2017_04beautyblender micro.mini – Size comparison to a penny

  • Full size:  —
    • Retail value: $18.00 USD (for two)
  • Deluxe sample size: n/a
    • Estimated value:  $9.00 USD

I own one of these already (the micro.mini pro, which is black) but I honestly only use it for travel. Since I stopped wearing liquid foundation, my regular size beautyblender’s primary use is for blending out my underage concealer, or blending out my cream contour on days when I feel like adding in that step. To be honest though, I don’t like packing the regular size beautyblender when traveling, so I found that the micro.mini is perfect for travel since it can still blend out my undereye concealer and take up less space. This will be relegated to my travel bag.

Clinique Dual-Ended Lash Building Primer and High Impact Mascara

SephoraPlayAugust2017_05Clinique Dual-Ended Lash Building Primer and High Impact Mascara deluxe sample

  • Full size:  0.16 oz (Lash Building Primer) / 0.28 oz (High Impact Mascara)
    • Retail value: $17.00 USD / $18.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.08 oz (Lash Building Primer) / 0.14 oz? (High Impact Mascara)
    • Estimated value: $8.50 USD / $9.00 USD

I know a lot of people who love this mascara primer and the mascara, but the mascara transfers on me to my brow and undereye (I’m a combo oily skin type) so I just won’t get any use out of this–which is fine, I’ll donate this to a friend! Who doesn’t love free mascara, right?? I do love the idea of a dual ended lash primer and mascara, and I hope other brands come out with something like this, even if they are samples.

Too Faced Mascara Melt Off Cleansing Oil

SephoraPlayAugust2017_06Too Faced Mascara Melt Off Cleansing Oil deluxe sample

  • Full size: 0.23 fl oz /  6.8 mL
    • Retail value: $17.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.01 fl oz / 0.5 mL
    • Estimated value: $1.25 USD

I’m not a huge fan of Too Faced for a few reasons, but I’ll probably trying this out to help remove my eye makeup and see if it’s any good. Of course, I have to laugh a little bit because this is such a SMALL sample compared to the full size, and it’s value is even less than that of a perfume sample spray. A lot of samples that end up in the Play box are the kind of samples you’d get using 100 points at Sephora, but those samples are usually more generous than this. I would expect this to be handed out for free like a foil satchet sample of a moisturizer or something, one-time use.

Glamglow Volcasmic Matte Glow Moisturizer

SephoraPlayAugust2017_07Glamglow Volcasmic Matte Glow Moisturizer deluxe sample

  • Full size: 1.7 oz / 50 mL
    • Retail value: $54.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.17 fl oz / 5 mL
    • Estimated value: $5.40 USD

I’ve used this two times so far, and I have found that it wears really well under the First Aid Beauty Skin Tint (review of that coming soon). The product felt solid when I first touched it, but the warmth of my fingers helped it to begin melting down, and when you get past that top layer it’s actually quite soft and malleable. It melts into the skin and has a smoothing effect, but not necessarily pore-filling. I can’t say with certainty that it does any oil control (as I would assume most ‘matte’ products would maybe offer) but my FAB Skin Tint went over it nicely. While oil did come through during the day, there wasn’t any weird texture that occurred from being worn under makeup. It has a light orange creamsicle scent to it, which I am assuming is their signature scent for skincare. I will definitely be using up this sample, although I’m not sure if I would buy a full size yet.

Kat Von D Beauty “Saint” and “Sinner” – Perfume Samples

SephoraPlayAugust2017_08Kat Von D Beauty “Saint” and “Sinner” perfume samples

  • Full size:  1.7 fl oz / 50  mL (both Saint and Sinner)
    • Retail value: $65.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: Vial – about 0.04 fl oz?
    • Estimated value: ~$1.53 USD (each vial)

I really was expecting to like Sinner more than Saint, since I prefer fragrances that are a little more sultry… but Saint is the winner for me. Sinner had a weird spice to it that wasn’t pleasant, and I prefer Elizabeth & James Nirvana Black so much more (which is the fragrance style I think Sinner was trying to match). Saint, on the other hand, was a pleasant surprise. It’s a sexy fresh floral, in a way. I wore it last night to dinner and if I smell my skin right now (the next day), I can still get a hint of it, so I would say it wears pretty well. I don’t know if I would go and buy a full size right now, as I have a few bottles of perfume I need to work through, but Saint is on my list as a potential future buy.

Final Thoughts

The total value of this box was $44.93 USD, which seems to be fairly in line with expected value each month. It certainly exceeded the $10.60 I paid for the month, but I’m only excited about $17.18 worth of this box. I’m inundated with beauty sponges, not really a fan of Too Faced (who, by the way, gave the least amount of value in this box — which is saying something considering perfume samples should be the least amount of value typically), and I already have tried both of the Clinique products and I already know I’m not a huge fan.

This was a loss for me considering everything altogether. I was so excited with last month’s box, I guess they had to bring me back down from Cloud 9 and remind me nothing gold can stay, haha. :’) If I had to give a rating, I would say this is around a 2/5 box for me. I can see it being an awesome box for other people, though, if they have never tried any of the products.
