Hi everyone! In today’s post we are going to be reviewing the July 2017 Sephora Play! beauty box. For those who aren’t familiar, Sephora Play! is a monthly subscription beauty box that contains five deluxe makeup, skincare, or haircare samples, as well as one fragrance sample, for $10/month. The box variation that you receive is based on your Sephora profile. With that being said, let’s jump into reviewing what I received for my July 2017 Play! box.
Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding
Boscia Charcoal Pore Pudding deluxe sample
- Full size: 2.8 fl oz / 85 mL
- Retail value: $38.00 USD
- Deluxe sample size: 0.84 fl. oz / 25 mL
- Retail value: $11.40 USD
When I saw the spoilers for the July Sephora Play! box, I was so excited that every box would have a mask / treatment of some kind in it, and this was the one I was hoping would be in mine. It’s really cool looking (white and black product swirled together) and the amount is pretty generous!
You are supposed to scoop it out, mix it together, and apply a thin layer to your face. I used it last night for the first time and my skin felt very smooth and refreshed afterward. As for if it did anything for my pores, I think the product needs a few more uses before I can say for sure, but I’m definitely going to work through this product.
Milk Makeup Cooling Water
Milk Makeup Cooling Water deluxe sample
- Full size: 1.2 oz / 34 g
- Retail value: $24.00 USD
- Deluxe sample size: 0.1 oz / 3 g
- Estimated value: $2 USD
I have only tried one other Milk Makeup product before–a deluxe sample of the Milk Makeup Blur Stick (which has the exact same packaging)–so I’m excited to try this out. I watched a few YouTube videos awhile back where everyone was giving this a go and commenting how interesting it felt on their skin. Sephora’s site says that it is a “soothing seawater, caffeine-infused gel stick to de-puff eyes and energize the look of skin”. I don’t think this is meant as a primer so I would use this first and then follow with my normal routine. I’m going to try this out tonite before meeting up with my friends for dinner.
It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara
It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara deluxe sample
- Full size: 0.3 oz
- Retail value: $24.00 USD
- Deluxe sample size: 0.17 oz
- Estimated value: $13.60 USD
I’ve actually used up a full-sized It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, and I really enjoy the formula and the brush, so I am totally happy to have a deluxe sample of it to use. There’s not too much to be said here–it gives volume, does a decent enough job of volumizing, and leaves lashes looking nice and dark. It’s not totally resistant to smearing–sometimes I have to wipe away some smudgy parts on my brow bone with my lashes touch. But other than that, no complaints here.
Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray
Briogeo Rosarco Milk Reparative Leave-In Conditioning Spray deluxe sample
- Full size: 5 oz / 147.9 mL
- Retail value: $20.00 USD
- Deluxe sample size: 0.75 fl oz / 22 mL
- Estimated value: $3.00 USD
There was a period of time where Briogeo was being mentioned on all the YouTube channels and it was showing up in tons of subscription boxes. I have never used anything from Briogeo, so this is going into my bathroom right away because I love leave-in sprays. My hair is pretty fine and can tangle easily, and since it is color-treated, I try to keep it as hydrated as possible and do what I can to avoid breakage. Super excited to try this out.

- Estimated value: $9.38 USD

Swatch of bareMinerals GEN NUDE Liquid Lipcolor in “Swag”
I follow Reddit’s /r/BeautyBoxes and there are so many times when people have expressed disappointment in the lip color selection that Sephora Play! has done in the past. I think this must be one of the most universally flattering colors they have ever decided to put into a box, and everyone is over the moon happy about it.
This lip product smells amazing, first of all, and first swatch it came across as incredibly pigmented and smooth. The texture is mousse-y, which suggests to me that it won’t be drying when worn on the lips. Like I mentioned earlier, I’m going to dinner with friends tonite, so I will be wearing this lip color to see how long-wearing it is.
Atelier Cologne “Orange Sanguine” – Perfume Sample
Atelier Cologne”Orange Sanguine” perfume sample
- Full size: 1 fl oz / 30 mL
- Retail value: $75.00 USD
- Deluxe sample size: Vial – about 0.04 fl oz?
- Estimated value: ~$3.00 USD
This perfume smells just like oranges, which is kind of obvious due to the name, but I think I wasn’t expecting it to smell so truly like fresh, crushed oranges. The notes are blood orange and bitter orange, paired with jasmine, geranium, amber woods, tonka beans, and sandalwood. It’s very fresh and playful, and for me it is a unique scent as I don’t own anything in my perfume collection at all like it. This will be another item from the box that I wear tonite and see how it works with my skin chemistry.
I personally do not like these kind of vial samples as I can struggle with removing the caps, so I would have preferred it as a spray, because I would be more likely to reach for it and use it up that way.
The total value of this box was $42.38 USD, with most of the value coming from the Boscia Pore Pudding, the It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara, and the bareMinerals GEN NUDE Liquid Lipcolor, so it went above and beyond the $10.60 I paid for the month. Let it also be known that for the first time ever, I’m excited to try all of the items in the box.
This was definitely a win for me all around. I’m keeping my Play! subscription for now as this box and the last one have left me pretty happy. I can only hope that Sephora continues to pay attention to our Play! profiles, and puts in samples that we haven’t gotten before as 100 Point Perk Rewards, etc.
