Sephora Play! June 2017 — Beauty Box Review, Box #042

Hi everyone! In today’s post we are going to be reviewing the June 2017 Sephora Play! beauty box. For those who aren’t familiar, Sephora Play! is a monthly subscription beauty box that contains five deluxe makeup, skincare, or haircare samples, as well as one fragrance sample, for $10/month. The box variation that you receive is based on your Sephora profile. With that being said, let’s jump into reviewing what I received for my June 2017 Play! box.

Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil

SephoraPlayJune2017_02Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil deluxe sample

  • Full size: 3 oz / 98.9 mL
    • Retail value: $32 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.28 fl. oz / 9.2 mL
    • Retail value: $2.99 USD

So even though this had a cap on it, the products in my Play box came and were covered in some of this oil, and you can see this little sample bottle isn’t full. When I took the cap off, I could see oil beads sitting on the outside of the pump component, so I’m honestly not sure how the oil managed to get 1) pumped out in transit, and 2) get past the cap in order to get on the other products. I had to wipe things down so I do have a preliminary impression from that.

This Rose Hair & Body oil is silicone-fee, alcohol-free, paraben-free, and not tested on animals. It smells really lovely, just like rose petals, very soft though and not overpowering.  It’s meant to moisturize skin and hair, and I’ve never used a hair & body oil before, so I’m really interested in trying this out and seeing how it feels. My hair is color-treated so the ends can be really dry, so I’m interested to see if this helps.

IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel

SephoraPlayJune2017_03IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel deluxe sample

  • Full size: 5 oz / 145 mL
    • Retail value: $27 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.5 fl oz / 15 mL
    • Estimated value: $2.70 USD

I’ve never tried anything from the brand IGK, which I am fairly certain the name is compiled from the initials of the four creators of the brand (Franck Izquierdo, Leo Izquierdo, Chase Kusero, and Aaron Genia). The idea from the brand is a new modern, undone, “unscripted” look. I’m not personally totally into the “rich kid” aesthetic, but maybe that’s because I’m getting old and have bills to pay. Who knows. Regardless, what matters here is whether or not this is a good hair styling product.

This Coconut Oil Gel is paraben and sulfate free, vegan, cruelty free, and offers some UV protection. It says to apply to towel dried hair, and let air dry, but my hair is so fine that I always feel like I need to do some blow drying (at least at the roots) to get some volume. I’m not sure how this product will work for my hair but I’m willing to give it a shot and try to work it into my routine, because I do love trying new hair products. Plus, this one smells really nice.

First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer

SephoraPlayJune2017_04First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer deluxe sample

  • Full size: 1.7 oz / 50 mL
    • Retail value: $28 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.34 oz / 9.6 g
    • Estimated value: $5.60 USD

I already know I love this! I have the full-sized version of it already, and I actually have a deluxe sample size like this, but I don’t mind have doubles of this because it’s so perfect for travel. I’m a combination-oily skin type and used to be very adverse to anything that wasn’t mattifying, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve begun to change my way of thinking and am welcoming products that hydrate my skin, with positive results.

Formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, this smoothing priming moisturizer is very lightweight, doesn’t leave any sparkle behind, just a nice healthy sheen. It doesn’t do much in the way of pore minimizing but my makeup definitely glides on easily after I’ve applied this and given it a chance to settle. I usually hate fragrance in makeup and skincare, but the smell is really nice and it doesn’t irritate my skin (probably because it’s not artificial), so that’s a bonus as well. This is said to be for all skin types, even sensitive ones!

Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer

  • Full size: 0.75 oz / 21 g
    • Retail value: $31.00 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.10 fl oz / 3 g
    • Estimated value: ~$4.43 USD

What’s there to say about this product that hasn’t already been said? It’s one of the most popular face primers out there, known for its light balm texture and ability to fill in pores and help smooth out the skin. If this was my first time getting this sample, I might be excited about having a chance to try it. But, I actually already have a few of these laying around already that I am trying to work through, so I’ve gifted this to a friend instead.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in “K-Dub”

  • Full size: 0.22 oz / 6.6 mL
    • Retail value: $20 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: 0.10 fl oz / 3 mL
    • Estimated value: $9.09 USD

I’ve tried one other Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lip before, and while I liked the formula in general, the color didn’t suit my tastes. (The shade was Bow N Arrow, and it pulled entirely too “tan brown” on me and had none of that beige with a pink undertone that so many swatches seem to show. Very disappointed.) When I saw that K-Dub was one of the potential colors to receive (Lovesick was the other), I wasn’t quite sure if I would be on board with it. But, here it is… and I kind of love it?

This color is unlike any others I have in my current collection, and although it is bright, I think its tone looks like it would work really well with my skin. Not really a shade I will be busting out for work but I’m thinking this would be fun to wear out with my friends at dinner or trivia or something like that. I’m excited to have this sample–which is, by the way, pretty generously sized–it’s about half the product of a full sized Everlasting Liquid Lipstick!

Yves Saint Laurent “Black Opium” – Perfume Sample

SephoraPlayJune2017_08Yves Saint Laurent “Black Opium” perfume sample

  • Full size: 1.6 fl oz / 50 mL
    • Retail value: $91 USD
  • Deluxe sample size: Vial – 0.04 fl oz / 1.2 mL
    • Estimated value: $2.18 USD

I already know that I like this perfume, so its nice to have a little vial of it on hand for the next time I take a weekend trip! This is a beautiful, womanly fragrance, but it doesn’t smell old. It’s a very modern take on what a woman’s scent should be, and I love it.

The notes listed on the Sephora page for this perfume are coffee accord, orange blossom, cedar wood essence, and patchouli essence. There’s something so interesting and unique about the coffee accord being used, but it doesn’t smell heavy or bitter–this is a floral scent that you just can’t quite put your finger on. Excellent fragrance to receive in this Play! box and definitely not going to be set aside and forgotten about like many other perfume samples I have.

Final Thoughts

The final value of the box totaled up to $26.99 USD, which is basically half of what the May box was valued at… but I’m way more excited over the products in this box than last month’s! This exceeds the $10 I paid for it.

The total value of products that I’m “excited to try” is $22.56 USD, which is almost the entire box. The only product I wasn’t super pumped about was the Benefit POREfessional, and that was purely because I already have two or three others of this exact sample laying around that I’m trying to work through. This box gets a 4.5 out of 5 stars this month. Like I said in the May box review, I’m giving Sephora Play! two more months to impress me again, and this month definitely did. I’m hoping next month is good, as well. We shall wait and see.
